Local Activities
Although it is called High Desert; while the climate is dry, the
landscape of Central Oregon is more influenced by water than anything
else. Snow blankets the Cascade Mountains and then melts into the
many lakes and rivers that become the backdrop for warm-weather adventures
at Sunriver.
A stay at our Family Lodge allows you exclusive access to the many activities that the resort and surrounding areas offer. Sun-drenched mornings on the slopes or the fairways and pastel sunsets lingering over snowy peaks and towering pines are the way of life in Central Oregon.
The ultimate year-round family playground, Sunriver Resort
offers 3 world-class golf courses, 30 miles of scenic bike
trails, Tennis, swimming and horseback riding amongst other
activities.
The miles of rivers and streams and more than 150 mountain lakes offer something for every fisherman. Native fish include rainbow bass, mackinaw, brook trout, kokanee and salmon. You can catch and release wild redband trout on the Deschutes, Metolius, Fall or Crooked rivers. There are several outfitters and full service fly shops in Sunriver. These offer equipment rentals, guided trips and fly fishing schools.
Enjoy a leisurely canoe, kayak or raft trip down the scenic
Deschutes River or for the more adventurous there is whitewater
rafting through Class IV rapids at Big Eddy on the Deschutes.
Bike or ride horses on the picturesque Deschutes River Trail
or hike up Pilot Butte, Tumalo Peak or South Sister for breathtaking
views of the area.
The Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory offer a museum with exhibits on wildlife, astronomy and natural history. For a special evening under the stars, view the universe through a variety of telescopes located at the Observatory and Robert M. Glass starport.
During winter there is Mt. Bachelor for downhill skiing and
snowboarding and there are also excellent cross country ski
trails surrounding Sunriver and the nearby countryside. The
mountain is
open from mid-November to early July and is only a 30 minute
drive from the resort.
The Sunriver Chamber of Commerce publishes a full calendar of Annual Events. Nearby Bend offers ample opportunity to catch up on some “retail therapy”. A thriving community with an idyllic setting along the Deschutes River, this town has fine dining, shopping, and a charming downtown area. Nearby Sisters brings the Old West to life and the town’s main street sells a variety of items behind a façade of western storefronts.
Wherever your interests lie, Sunriver Resort has something to keep young and old busy. The cultural history of the region is as rich and varied as the recreation. There are museums, art galleries, major music festivals and a year-round art school. Immerse yourself in the region’s traditions, history and wildlife at the High Desert Museum south of Bend.
When checking in to the Family Lodge at Sunriver Resort pick up a copy of the Essential Sunriver map and tourist guide. Complete information regarding all activities offered can be found in this guidebook.
